On May 11, 2025, the Tampa Theatre will present a cultural celebration with the local Haitian community. The event will include pre-show performances, meeting with local organizations and small businesses, and screening the 2024 film Mountains by Haitian-American and Florida-based filmmaker Monica Sorelle. After the movie, an award ceremony will honor several members who contributed to the Haitian community in Health and Wellness, Youth Empowerment, Community Affairs, Arts and Entertainment, and Athletic Excellence. And there will be more surprises too!
“We are excited to celebrate the culture through Haitian film and entertainment. We are going to have a lot of resources available on site for the members of the Tampa Bay community about health services and different educational programs,” said Josemane Ancion, one of the organizers of the Haitian Flag Day Cinema event.
The inaugural emcee for this event is Multimedia Journalist from ABC Action News, Rebecca Petit. Doors will be open at 1:30 pm, followed by the movie Mountains at 3:00 pm. The festival will end at 6:00 pm. Tickets will be available to purchase at the Tampa Theatre or online ($10.00 per person).
Another Haitian Flag Day Cinema organizer, Kimberly Roche, believes this event will be memorable. “This will be so fun for all the attendees… We are getting positive feedback from the people that are coming.”
