Amani Sams always wanted to work in the media industry. The 29-year-old journalist, entrepreneur, and editor-in-chief of Aman Magazine has done it all and is still thriving! “I have done a little bit of radio, a little bit of print media, and broadcasting journalism,” said Sams.

How Aman Magazine all started?

Before starting her magazine, Sams was a blogger as an undergrad. She loves writing about pop culture. In 2013, Sams started her bi-monthly publication, which focuses on fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and entertainment based in Atlanta, GA. With support from her Millennial and Generation Z readers (women of color), Sams expanded her digital and print presence by starting two other magazines. Aman Magazine Latina as the Spanish version, and Teen Aman Magazine focuses on teen topics. Sams has had celebrities grace magazine covers, which includes Tron Austin, the son of a singer from R&B girl group TLC, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, and Netflix’s Love Is Blind star, Diamond Jack. She has also done several celebrity interviews, one of them with Rapper Latto.

Opportunities for Women

Sams thinks the media industry has changed drastically for women, especially women of color, for over 20 to 30 years. “We have a lot more resources. I feel like women of color are definitely coming into the media space with great ideas. Social media is helping us expand all of our media careers. You can host a podcast… Create your own platform!” Said Sams.

In addition, Sams believes, since 2019, there has been a significant change in opportunities for women to become business owners during the pandemic. “The pandemic has [really like] pushed a lot of people… And it’s the confidence now, and being female entrepreneurs,” said Sams.

In 2015, Amani Sams graduated from Georgia Gwinnett College with a bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in writing and rhetoric. Four years later, Sams received her master’s degree in new media journalism from Full Sail University. Currently, Sams is attending the institution to obtain a second master’s degree, in entertainment business, by 2022.
